Misty Mountain Model Railroad Museum

Misty Mountain Model Railroad MuseumThis is an outstanding display of engineering and design, and an exceptional model railroad museum that's open to visitors. The display is considered to be America's largest private owned O-gauge railroad. The 3,400-sq. ft. layout with 14 O-gauge trains, travels along one-mile of track with 12 bridges, 4 trestles and 15 tunnels. A 6-foot bridge rises to allow visitors to enter the display, plus there's a 17-foot trestle over a re-creation of the Tallulah Gorge. There are thousands and thousands of individual items covering the entire surface of the display. Every inch of space is meticulously designed for layout and effect.

This model railroad museum's display extends from floor to ceiling with hand formed mountains rising over 6-ft. tall, and a simulated valley and river gorge creating a visitor's walkway. A replica of the Tallulah Gorge divides the central mountain range, plus one of the railroad bridges cross over the walkway. Trains along the rail lines wind across the valleys, in and out of tunnels from low elevations to high elevations. Puffy cotton clouds hang from the ceiling with bi-wing model planes soaring the sky.

Misty Mountain Model Railroad - Mountain TownsReplicas of Blue Ridge Mountain towns and outer cities are scattered throughout the landscape. A few of the towns included are Blairsville, Copperhill, Helen, Gainesville, Kennesaw, and more, right down to detailed courthouse constructions, theaters, vehicles, manufactures and pedestrians. Biltmore Estates is perched upon the tallest mountain scraping the sky, plus there's a bridge, that one has to slightly stoop under along the walkway with a train often running overhead.

There's an entire big top circus including the circus train and performing animals. The big top tent is partially open to view the intricacy of a three-ring circus; including an elephant act performing before the stands crowded with fans. There are several Civil War battle re-enactment scenes and troop movements scattered in historically appropriate places. There's even a handmade replica of the Tara Manor from 'Gone with the Wind.'

Misty Mountain Model Railroad and the amazement of childrenThere is so much here it would take a month to precisely view every simulated scene with more features than one can imagine.  It would require several trips to take it all in, so as not to hold up the viewers behind you. It's a fantasy-land on a massive scale and fun for all ages.

The Misty Mountain Model Railroad Museum's creative genius is credited to Charles Griffin and his son. The beauty part of it all is that any visitor under the age of 17-years are admitted free with an adult, and adult admissions are only a $5.00 per person donation to the Union County Historical Society.
