John C. Campbell Folk School - Scandinavian Dance Weekend: Waltz, Schottische, Hambo & More
Scandinavian Dance Weekend: Waltz, Schottische, Hambo & More
Join us for an introduction to the rich variety of the dance and music of Scandinavia. Key themes will include developing balance, both alone and as part of a dancing couple, and learning to lead and follow. Our primary focus will be waltz, schottische, hambo, polka, mazurka, and some of the special regional dances from Norway and Sweden. Enjoy amazing live music by fiddler Char Bostrom, and expect lots of dancing! All levels welcome, singles and couples.
Roo is one of America's foremost folk-dance instructors and authorities on Scandinavian folk dance, especially great with beginners! She began folk dancing as part of rainy-day PE at school. Her interest in Scandinavian dance was sparked by the Hambo and a college folk-dance class. These led to a Masters in Dance with a focus in Dance Ethnology from UCLA. She began teaching Scandinavian dance after studying with Ingvar and Jofrid Sodal during her first visit to the San Diego Folk Dance Conference. Roo's work in dance has taken many avenues, including teaching folk dance in public schools, dance camps, and workshops; performing/choreographing for performance groups; and directing dance camps.
Larry, husband and dance partner of Roo Lester, enjoys spreading the excitement of Scandinavian folk dance to others, and especially enjoys seeing beginners take to the floor!
