Settled in the far upper reaches above the Blue Ridge Mountains is the historical mountain country of Watuaga County, North Carolina. Watuaga County is one of the most premier counties in the Blue Ridge Mountain Province. This magnificent mountain country is home to the renowned Appalachian State University and several beautiful mountain towns and communities. This “High Country” of the Blue Ridge offers fun and excitement for all ages throughout the year.
Watauga County was formed in 1849 from parts of Ashe, Caldwell, Wilkes and Yancey Counties. The county was named after the Watauga River, which meaning “beautiful waters,” in the Native American language.

The County Seat of Watauga County is in the mountain city town of Boone, named after the legendary explorer and hunter Daniel Boone who was also known to reside in this mountainous region before moving on to Kentucky.
