Hanging Dog Campground & Recreational Area

Located on Hiwassee Lake, this recreation area features a campground with 68 campsites, picnic area, hiking trails, an 8-mile mountain-bike trail system, and a boat launching ramp. Hiwassee Lake has 180 miles of shoreline and is a popular place for fishing, boating, and water skiing.

The 1-mile Shore Trail overlooks the lake. To reach Hanging Dog, travel about 5 miles on SR 1326 from Murphy.

 

Facilities: Camping, Fishing, Hiking and Restrooms Available.

Season: Open from April 15 to October 31.

Directions: From Murphy, take NC 1326 west for 5 miles. One loop.

Then get settled in and head out to explore our beautiful area. You're just a short ride to the Cherohala Skyway and Tail of the Dragon. Visit Fields of the Wood Park, hop on a mountain train, or join in a class at the famous John C. Campbell Folk School. Piney Knob Hiking Trails are just around the corner. Fires Creek, Lake Hiawassee, Nantahala, and Fontana are great natural areas to visit.

Scattered throughout the beautiful Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds are 207 camping and RV sites that offer modern conveniences such as water, electricity, telephone and internet.  There are 92 sites in the first area and 115 paved sites, open year-round, in the second area. Most sites offer beautiful views of Lake Chatuge, and campers can take advantage of the Fairgrounds' many amenities including a playground, boat ramp, paved playing courts, full time Park Ranger/Security Guard, shaded picnic tables and the Hamilton Rhododendron Gardens.
