Lake Chatuge Campground
Activity Overview: Overlooking beautiful Lake Chatuge in the north Georgia mountains, this recreation area offers camping, boating, fishing and hiking. Thirty campsites are available, with tent pads, grills and picnic tables.
Other Opportunities: Hikers can enjoy the 1.2-mile Lake Chatuge trail around the pine-covered peninsula. Fishing for four species of bass, bream and catfish is popular among visitors. A boat launch is near the area entrance. The Forest Service Visitor Center atop Georgia's highest mountain, Brasstown Bald, is a nearby attraction.
Directions: Take U.S. 76 northwest from Hiawassee for 2 miles; turn left (south) on Georgia 288 for 1 mile.
Site Information: Loop through recreation area is paved. Several sites can accommodate trailers; many are for tents only.
Site Amenities: Each campsite is equipped with tent pad, lantern post, and picnic table. Restrooms, drinking water and cold-water showers are available.
Requirements: Area opens late April and closes late October; gate opens at 7 a.m. and closes at 10 p.m. daily. A fee is required.
Recommended Seasons: Spring through fall.
